Measuring windows for replacement can be tricky. Considerations for frame to opening clearance as well as trueness of the window opening have to be taken into account. It's advised that a professional make measurements for replacement and purchasing of windows.

HOW TO MEASURE YOUR WINDOWS

To get a "guesstimate" of your window sizes you can come pretty close by following these instructions.

  •    From inside the house you can measure the opening of the window. From sill to sill (see illustration below).
  •    Add one inch to each dimension, for total frame size. If sill to sill width, measures 47 inches, you add one (1) inch to that for a total width of 48 inches. Do the same for height; sill to sill plus one inch.
  •    Make all measurements in inches for estimate purposes. Window manufacturers use feet and inches and it can get confusing in written form if not presented correctly.

NOTE: Side and top sills are actually referred to as "Jambs". To keep it simple we referred to them all as sills.
